This item is a vintage electric railway lantern, metal.  Adlake 31-B.
A new 6V battery is included.

It says "PLEASE REMOVE BATTERY WHEN DONE".
Someone didn't, and the old battery leaked so there's some rust on the inside, but the lantern still works.
