HEMMINGWAY  KEYWAY SLOTTING ATTACHMENT

The attachment is a self-contained completely independent device which fixes on the lathe boring table with two bolts.  A lever-operated cylindrical ram carries a tool-bar with an inserted H.S.S. cutter bit.  An eccentric sets it to cut either parallel with  the work bore or tapered either way.   It will also cut keyways in bores tapered up to 15 degrees either way.  The round tool bits are accurately located  on lathe center height, through the method used in the construction of the device, and they are readily ground to high precision  with simple equipment, so that exact positioning of a keyway is assured.

The latest design gives a more easily and quickly constructed accessory without losing any rigidity.  A sturdy aluminum casting fitted with substantial porous bronze bushes now accepts a ground steel ram carrying the cutting tool.  Angular setting is by protractor, a sliding dowel quickly returns the ram to the parallel position.

“Broach” bars can be made for keyways to virtually any size and customers have also reported success cutting internal gears.  The keyways are broached a few 0.001”s per stroke with feed increased by the cross slide,
